SWARTMORE, Pa. - Frostburg State faced rival Salisbury and No. 22 ranked Stevens Tech on the final day of the 2007 Garnett Classic at Swarthmore, Sunday. The Bobcats downed Salisbury 3-2 but fell to Stevens 3-0 in the tournament championship.
FSU (9-5) dropped game one to the Sea Gulls 30-24 but won game two 30-26. The Bobcats fell behind again dropping the third set 30-28. Frostburg State was able to rally for the win with 30-26 and 15-7 wins in the final two games.
Sophomore
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led the team in the five-game match with 25 kills while senior
Jenny Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) passed out 50 assists.
A pair of freshmen also helped the Bobcats to win.
Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had 21 digs and
Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had a double-double, 12 kills and 12 digs.
In the championship loss to ranked Stevens Tech, FSU was shutout 30-24, 30-24 and 30-19.
Thomas again had a solid all-around effort with 10 digs, six kills and one service ace while Winterling led the attack with 12 kills.
Wheaton made 26 assists, Burke had nine digs and sophomore
Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) and freshman
Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) each had five kills
FSU is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Villa Julie at 7:00 pm.
