FROSTBURG, MD. – Junior
Carly Rihard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) scored four goals and handed out six assists as Frostburg State downed York, 17-12, in women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
FSU ended a four-game losing streak with the win and sits at 5-8 while York is now 6-10.
The Bobcats trailed 10-8 two and a half minutes into the second half, but they scored seven-consecutive goals to take a decisive 15-10 advantage.
Rihard now leads the team with 32 goals on the season. Freshman Elisabeth Hildebrand (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) also scored four goals including the final two of the game for FSU. Senior Ann Long (New Market, Md./Linganore) scored all three of her goals during the 7-0 Bobcat run early in the second half.
York, despite the loss, outshot Frostburg State 46-35 and was led in scoring by Brianna Yapps (four goals and one assist).
However, FSU senior netminder Rachel Lewis (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) held the Spartans to just 12 goals while making a career-high 27 saves. YC keeper Anne Fustle stopped nine shots and gave up 17 goals.
Frostburg State trailed until 11:16 in the opening frame when Rihard assisted a goal by senior Ashley Mattison (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) as FSU tied the contest at 4-4. Fifteen seconds later, freshman Katie Dannemann (Herndon, Va./Paul IV Catholic) gave the Bobcats a 5-4 lead on another assist from Rihard.
Rihard and Dannemann each tallied one goal for the hosts in the first half as FSU led at halftime 7-6.
York came out in the second half and scored four out of the first five goals to take a 10-8 lead setting up the seven-goal run by the Bobcats.
FSU wraps up its 2007 season when it travels to St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
