Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) hit two homeruns to help Frostburg State to a split in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference baseball action, Sunday afternoon on senior day at Bob Wells Field.
FSU (22-13, 10-5) struggled offensively in game one, registering just two hits in a 2-1 loss. The hosts rebounded in game two for a 6-0 win backed by Holmes’ dominating performance on the mound.
Holmes allowed just two UPG (15-17, 10-8) players to reach second base all game while earning his third win of the season. He also struckout four and walked one.
Peake led the charge at the plate going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. His first homerun, a laser down the left field line, was part of a three-run fourth that helped FSU take a 4-0 lead. In the fifth FSU took a 6-0 advantage when Peake smashed a two-run shot that cleared the left field fence in almost the same spot as his fourth inning homer.
Junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) had a two-run double to account for the other two runs in the fourth, knocking in junior Joe Daddura (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) and freshman Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory), and senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) singled home Daddura in the third to put Frostburg State on the board, 1-0.
In the first game, Gitzen hit his seventh homerun of the season but it wasn’t enough as FSU fell 2-1.
UPG starter Ben Sorosky tossed all 7.0 innings giving up one run on two hits while fanning five. Junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst (LIU)) endured the loss despite allowing only two runs on five hits.
UPG broke a scoreless contest with two runs in the fourth. Jody Wilkerson hit a two-out two-run double to centerfield for a 2-0 lead.
Frostburg State’s lone run came in the sixth on a solo homer from Gitzen.
FSU returns to action tomorrow when it wraps up its AMCC regular season with a twinbill against Pitt-Bradford at 1:00 pm.
