Solid Pitching Leads Basbeall Past Mt. Aloysius

LILLY, Pa. — Starting pitchers Aaron Main (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) and Scott Eastment (Warrenton, Va./Paul VI (Georgetown)) each tossed a complete game and allowed just three runs apiece as Frostburg State swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Mt. Aloysius, 4-3 and 10-3, Friday afternoon.

Main tossed all 7.0 innings in the opener giving up nine hits while striking out nine and improved his overall record to 6-2 and a perfect 4-0 in the conference. Meanwhile, Eastment allowed just four hits while fanning four and is 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the AMCC.

As a team, FSU improved to 22-12 overall and 10-4 in the league while MTA falls to 12-20 overall and 6-11 in the conference.

The Bobcats break a 2-2 tie in the second inning when senior Mike Gitzen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) singled home two runs, senior Art Barone (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y./Spring Valley) and sophomore Joe Clark (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle). Earlier in the inning, junior Brett Mitchell (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) tied the game when he singled home classmate Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).

The Mounties plated one run in the second to narrow the count to 4-3 but Main settled down and held the hosts to just five hits over the final five innings.

In the nightcap, FSU rallied from a 1-0 MTA lead with four runs in the third and later three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to earn the victory.

Clark scored the first run of the game for the Bobcats on an error by the Mountie pitcher in the second. Gitzen scored freshman Andrew Derr (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) on a sac fly for the go ahead run while junior Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and senior Ryan Webb (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) later recorded RBIs as the visitors took a 4-1 lead.

In the third inning, Clark and Mitchell both scored an a error by the shortstop and Speights later doubled home Gitzen for a 7-1 lead. Mt. Aloysius scored two runs in the fourth but Frostburg State put the game away with three runs in the sixth. Gitzen powered the inning with a two-run triple.

On the afternoon, Gitzen was 3-for-6 with five RBIs, three runs and two triples.

FSU returns to the field on Sunday when it hosts Pitt-Greensburg for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
