Softball Beats Polytechnic; Falls to Rowan On Final Day of Atlantic vs. East Challenge

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Frostburg State softball team beat Polytechnic 6-2 but fell to Rowan 10-0 on the final day of the Atlantic vs. East Challenge, Saturday.

Freshman Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown) earned her first collegiate victory in the win over the Fighting Blue Jays. She pitched a complete game giving up eight hits and two runs while striking out two.

Senior Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) put FSU (2-2) on the board in the first inning when she drove home freshman Amber Macintosh (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick) for a 1-0 edge.

Frostburg state tacked on three runs in the second for a 4-0 lead. Thanks to a two-out Polytechnic error, junior Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) each scored for the Bobcats. Junior Amanda Baldwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) later singled home senior Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) for the final run of the inning.

FSU added two final runs in the top of the sixth. Macintosh led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Potts double. Potts later crossed the plate on an Polytechnic infield error.

The Blue Jays scored one run in both sixth and seventh inniongs to end the scoring.

Filipowicz led the Bobcats at the plate going a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored. Potts was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a double while Macintosh was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the loss to Rowan, FSU allowed 10 runs on 12 hits including six runs in the sixth.

Potts suffered the loss for the Bobcats, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits. Coffey tossed 1.0 inning in relief allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits as well. Danielle Lawlor earned the win for the Profs after tossing 6.0 innings and scattering seven hits.

Filipowicz led Frostburg State in batting, going 2-for-2 while Griswold, Macintosh, Baldwin, and sophomore Kaitlyn Wagner (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) all went 1-for-3.

The Bobcats return on Thursday when they travel to Shenandoah for a doubleheader at 2:30 pm.
