VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Frostburg State softball team opened the season with a 3-2 upset of No. 2 ranked and defending National Champion Rutgers-Camden and later fell to North Carolina Wesleyan 13-1 to earn a split, Friday on the opening day of the Atlantic vs. East Challenge.
In the win over the Scarlet Rapters, FSU (1-1) broke a 1-1 tie with a run in both the sixth and seventh innings and limited the Scarlet Raptors to just one run in the seventh to earn the victory.
Senior starter Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) tossed a complete game allowing two runs on eight hits while fanning nine.
Junior Amanda Balwin (Baltimore, Md./North County) and teammateLindsay Seal (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore (Frederick CC)) each went 2-for-3 while Seal had an RBI.
Freshman Amber Macintosh (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick) was 1-for-2 with a run and two walks while classmate Samantha Quirin (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) was 1-for-4 with the game-winning RBI in the top of the seventh.
In the second game, NCWC outpaced the Bobcats with a four-run third inning and a six-run sixth to down FSU 13-1.
Frostburg State scored its lone run in the fourth inning on a Quirin RBI ground out.
Freshman starter Katelyn Coffey (Middletown, Md./Middletown) suffered the loss for FSU after lasting 4.2 innings and allowing seven runs. Junior Lindsay Durkin (Damascus, Md./Damascus) pitched 1.1 innings in relief allowing six runs but only one earned run.
Junior Meghan Dabkowski (Eastnorthport, N.Y./Commack) was 1-for-1 while Macintosh and freshman Kelly Filipowicz (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) each went 1-for-2.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they take on Rowan at 1:00 pm and Polytechnic at 3:00 pm.
