FROSTBURG, Md. — Sam Hanick scored a game-high 29 points to help Mt. Aloysius rally from an 11-point second half deficit to defeat Frostburg State, 98-91, Thursday evening at Bobcat Arena.
FSU (10-14, 9-8) dropped its third-straight game despite its second highest scoring output of the season. With the win, MTA (10-14, 9-8) avenged an earlier 98-83 loss to Frostburg State back in January.
Senior Dale DeBerry (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) led the Bobcats on the offensive end with 23 points followed junior Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) with 19 and junior Antione McCall (Essex, Md./Eastern Tech) with 16.
Hanick had a near-perfect night shooting, 9-of-10 (90.0%) from the field, 5-of-5 from three-point range and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Roman Mims was second in scoring for MTA with 22 points and Edgar Sampson added 12.
The Bobcats fell behind early, 11-4, just under three minutes into action. FSU rebounded to take a seven-point lead, 27-20, at 10:59.
Mt. Aloysius would retake the lead, 37-39 with 4:30 left in the half, but the hosts would close out the half with a 13-6 run for a 50-45 lead at halftime.
The Mounties made the first basket of the second period to cut the FSU lead to two, 50-48, but Frostburg State scored nine-straight points to open its largest lead of the game, 59-48 with 18:04 to play.
The Mounties would slowly cut into the Bobcat lead and surge ahead for the first time in the half, 77-74, on a Jimmy Snyder three-pointer at 8:48.
FSU tied the game at 78 and later at 91 but was never able to regain the lead as MTA broke the 91-91 deadlock with 1:14 left in the game and made five-of-six free throws down the stretch to earn the seven-point 98-91 victory.
For the contest, the Bobcats shot 33-of-67 (49.3%) from the field, 8-of-19 (42.1%) from beyond the arc and 17-of-28 (60.7%) from the free throw line. The Mounties fared a little better, shooting 35-of-67 (52.2%) from the field, 12-of-27 (44.4%) from three point land and 16-of-23 (69.6%) from the foul line.
The Bobcats return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lake Erie at 2:00 pm.
