ARLINGTON, Va. - Marymount scored 46 points and shot a season-high 69.2 percent from the floor in the opening half and never looked back as it defeated Frostburg State 89-64 in non-conference action, Sunday in Arlington, Va.
FSU falls to 2-7 overall while MU gets back on the winning track and sits at 6-2.
Freshman
Martin Fernandez (Germantown, Md./Northwest) scored 14 points to lead the Bobcats. He was followed by junior
Juan Wansley (Odenton, Md./Arundel) with 13.
Mike Gray led four players in double figures for the Saints with 18 points while Ronnie Barbour added 16.
Marymount had one of the best opening halves of the season scoring 46 points behind 69.2 percent shooting (18-of-26) from the floor. Frostburg State made just nine baskets in the first period and shot 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from the field.
Frostburg State scored the game’s opening basket but the Saints answered with a 15-1 run to take a 15-3 lead at 14:27.
The Bobcats put togther a run of their own, cutting the Saint lead to four, 20-16 with 11:06 remaining. Marymount used a little over the next five minutes to open a 21-point lead, 44-23. During the spurt, the Saints converted nine-straight baskets.
FSU closed out the half with four free throws and a three-pointer as it trailed 46-30 at the break.
The second half proved to be closer than the first as the hosts outscored Frostburg State 43-34.
The Bobcats were never able to bring the deficit back to single digits and the Saints opened a game-high 29 point edge, 85-56, with just 4:09 left in the game.
FSU was able to make a pair of baskets and three free throws down the stretch before the final buzzer.
The game concludes the fall semester athletic schedule for Frostburg State. Both basketball teams return to action on January 5 as the women play at 1:00 pm and the tip-off at 3:00 pm.
