Men's Soccer Defeats Carnegie Mellon in Overtime Thriller

Junior Gregg Laskow

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Junior Gregg Laskow (Plainsboro, N.J./WWP-North) scored the game-winning goal just 11 seconds into overtime to give the Bobcats a 3-2 victory over Carnegie Mellon, Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

With the win, FSU (11-8-1) punched its ticket to a semifinal match against Penn State Altoona on Saturday, November 10th. PSA defeated Misericordia 2-1 in overtime in other first round action. The Lions defeated the Bobcats 2-1 earlier this season.

The Tartans (9-6-2) jumped on the board first when a FSU defender slid to block a cross through the zone and ended up punching the ball into his own net.

The own goal would stand as the only score in the first half with CMU taking seven shots and FSU only two.

The second half was full of excitement as the Bobcats mustered some quick offense netting two goals in 80 seconds. FSU tied the score on a header by sophomore Steven Jacobsen (Waldorf, Md./West Lake) that was assisted by junior Adam Gracia (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton). Senior Kenny Dotter (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) placed the second goal (67:44) in the net with a blast from the right endline that found its way by Tartan keeper Matthew Bazin.

With 13:47 remaining in the game Tartan leading scorer Ricky Griffin tied the game beating FSU keeper Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River) with his 12th goal of the season.

Regulation was not enough to decide this game as it went to overtime tied 2-2. The overtime did not last long as Laskow found the net 11 seconds into the extra period on a one-timer off an assist from Dotter, sending the Bobcats to the semifinals of the ECAC Southern Championship.

Herford would finish the night with 10 saves as CMU outshot Frostburg State 19-9 on the evening.
