GREENSBURG, Pa. – Despite 16 points from both sophomore
Brittany James (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) and freshman
Mercedes White (Bowie, Md./Bowie), the Frostburg State women's basketball team opened the 2007-08 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference season with a 77-55 loss to Pitt-Greensburg.
FSU (3-3, 0-1) was outscored each half by 11 points and UPB (4-1, 1-0) had three starters in double figures in the win.
Sophomore
Shanell Williams (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds while White pulled down nine and James had eight. Junior
Jamie Morningstar (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was third on Frostburg State with eight points.
Amanda Sheaffer led all players with a career-high 27 points followed by Tiffany Menhorn with 20 and Kelsey Wilcox with 19. Pitt-Greensburg shot 48.5 percent (16-of-33) in the first and 45.5 percent (15-of-33) in the second to outpace the visitors.
Sheaffer scored the game's first basket and UPG used the next three minutes to open an 8-1 lead. FSU never led in the ballgame and came the closest at the 11:00 mark when Williams make a basket to narrow the gap to 15-14.
Pitt-Greensburg then put together a 16-6 run to open an 11-point lead, 31-20 with 7:11 left in the opening half. UPG would later push its lead to 12 but went into the lockerroom with a 40-29 edge.
The second didn't fare any better for Frostburg State as it was able to bring its deficit to within nine points just twice and Pitt-Greensburg was able to build its lead to a game-high 22, 77-55, at the final buzzer.
FSU returns to action on Dec. 1 when they travel to Penn State Behrend for an AMCC matchup at 2:00 pm.
