Volleyball Sweeps Home Trimatch

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State volleyball team won both matches against Penn State Behrend and Catholic University on Saturday at Bobcat Arena.

In the opening match of the day, FSU (16-9, 5-0) swept Penn State Behrend (14-11, 4-1) 3-0. Frostburg State won all three games with scores of 30-24, 30-28 and 30-26.

The Bobcats set the tone early in game one with an early 11-3 lead and later with an 18-10 lead before earning the win. Game two proved to be much closer as neither team held more than a three-point lead throughout the contest. FSU trailed 24-23 late in the match, but tied the game at 26 before scoring three-straight points to earn the win. The third game started much like the second as the two teams swapped the lead before the Bobcats pulled away to a five-point lead in the middle of the match, 20-15. The lead continued throughout the rest of the match until FSU captured the victory with a score of 30-26.

Sophomore Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led FSU with 23 kills followed by freshman Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) with 18. Senior Jenny Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) led with 51 assists and five service aces while freshman Rachel Burke (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) recorded 38 digs. Freshman Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) also added 27 digs for Frostburg State.

Leading the the Lions, were sophomores Brooke Gallentine with 24 assists and Sheila Ogden with 13 kills. Junior Brittnay Hennessy had 24 digs followed by freshman Danielle Woods with 22.

In the second match, Catholic (15-10) downed Penn State Behrend 3-2. PSB took games one (30-21) and four (30-26) but the Cardinals captured the fifth and decisive game 15-11. CUA also won game two (30-25) and game three (30-20)

Kilah Fox paced the Cardinals in victory with 19 kills while Cathleen Carroll had 22 digs and Emily McGlynn recorded 49 assists. PSB's Jenna Benzenhoefer smashed 17 kills followed by Kellie Marett with 14 kills and 25 digs. Gallentine again led the way with 56 assists.

Frostburg State swept Catholic in the third match of the day, 3-0, with game scores of 30-18, 30-25, and 30-24. In the first game, the Bobcats and the Cardinals battled for points. Although, FSU rallied after the 22-17 mark to score seven consecutive points, aiding in the victory. Frostburg State started off slow in the second game against the Cardinals, allowing them a 8-2 lead, but later rebounded to tie the game 10-10. The two teams continued to trade leads until FSU pulled away with a three point lead, 24-21 that continued through the rest of the game. Game three remained close with no more than a two point lead among the teams. Late in the game, Bobcats scored six consecutive points giving them a score of 27-21 and helping to earn the victory.

Wheaton recorded 37 assists against the Cardinals while sophomore Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) posted three blocks. Winterling smashed 15 kills followed by Thomas with 14 and Stephens with 10. Both Wheaton and Stephens had three service aces. Burke had 26 digs and Thomas had 23.

Leading for the Cardinals were sophomore Kim Ray and Fox with six kills each and McGlynn with 17 assists. Carroll recorded 19 digs.

The Bobcats are back on the court at Pitt-Greenburg at 3:00 pm on Tuesday October 16th.
