FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Debbie Bruen scored a game-high 18 points to guide the No. 18 ranked Mary Washington Eagles to a 74-54 win over Frostburg State Thursday evening at Bobcat Arena.

UMW is now 7-2 overall on the year while FSU slips to 6-4.

Junior Amanda LaPorta (Westminster, Md./Westminster) led the Bobcats with 16 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field. Senior Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber) was the only other FSU player in double figures with 10. Freshman Tonya Handy (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) tied for a team-high nine boards.

Mary Washington had four players in double figures led by Bruen who scored 12 of her points in the second half. Leigh Kampman netted 14 points followed by Sarah Flanagan with 11 and Liz Hickey with 10. Kampman tied FSU’s Handy for the game-high in rebounds (9).

FSU erased an early 6-3 deficit by opening a 13-10 edge at 12:42 on a jumper by LaPorta. The Eagles quickly answered with a 12-0 run to take a 22-13 lead with 7:17 to play in the opening half.

The Bobcats made a late run, narrowing the gap to four points 28-24 with 1:33 showing, but Mary Washington scored the final six points to close out the half with a 34-24 lead.

The Eagles outshot the Bobcats in opening period, 13-of-31 (41.9%) to 10-of-29 (34.5%).

Mary Washington opened the second stanza with a 10-4 spurt to take a 16-point lead, 44-28, four minutes into action. After Frostburg State cut the score to 48-39, UMW put the game away with a 19-3 run for a 67-24 advantage at 6:32.

FSU used the remainder of the game to bring the score to 74-54 as time expired.

UMW again outshot FSU in half, 15-of-30 (50.0%) to 12-of-28 (42.9%).

FSU returns to the court on January 6 when it hosts Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford at 2:00 pm
