BUFFAO, N.Y. – Cory Vander Sluis poured in 31 points to lead Hilbert past the Frostburg State men’s basketball team, 83-59, Saturday afternoon at the Hafner Recreation Center.

FSU (6-8, 5-2 AMCC) had its two-game winning streak come to an end after shooting a season-low 30.0 (9-of-36) percent from the field.

Meanwhile, Hilbert (8-6, 4-3 AMCC) shot a season-best 57.9 (33-of-57) percent from the floor to win its second-straight contest.

The Bobcats, who failed to reach 60 points for just the third time this season, were led by junior Antione McCall (Essex, Md./Eastern Tech) with 13 scores followed by senior Jade Belt (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) with 11. Belt also led the team with eight rebounds.

Hilbert took control of the game in the first half, backed by a 51.5 shooting percentage (17-of-33). The Hawks, who limited Frostburg State to just nine baskets in the period, opened a quick 7-0 lead with 16:29 left.

With the score 11-7 three minutes later, HC blew the game wide open tallying 19-consectuive points over the next five and half minutes to lead 30-7. McCall ended the Hilbert run with a layup at 8:01, but the Hawks would go on a 10-2 run to open a first-half high lead of 29 points at 4:28.

The Bobcats closed out the period by outscoring the hosts 14-6, but trailed at the break 46-25.

Both teams improved their shooting in the second stanza. FSU was 12-of-34 (35.3%) from the floor while Hilbert managed 16-of-24 (66.7%) from the field. Just under 12 minutes into the second, HC had pushed its lead to a game-high 37 points, 76-39.

Frostburg State would again spend the remainder of the half narrowing the Hawk lead, this time from 37 points with 8:10 left in the game to 24 points (83-59) as time expired.

FSU returns to action on Monday when it welcomes Lake Erie to Bobcat Arena for a 3:00 pm showdown.
