FROSTBURG, Md. – Medaille freshman Gary Boughton scored the only goal of the match, to give the Mavericks a 1-0 win over Frostburg State in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

With the win, Medaille remains atop the AMCC at 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Bobcats fall to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.

Frostburg State came into the game with something to prove, losing to Medaille in double overtime in last years AMCC Semifinals.

The first half of the game was played with high intensity from both sides, as the teams battled to a 0-0 halftime decision.

Early in the second half, Medaille had several chances to net a goal; however senior goalkeeper Derek Richardson (New Windsor, Md./Linganore) made three outstanding saves, to keep the game scoreless.

The Mavericks broke through and scored the only goal of the match in the 64th minute. Boughton stole the ball from an FSU defender and then slotted the ball underneath the outstretched arm of Richardson.

Frostburg State would continue to play with intensity as senior striker Jeff Bisker (Fallston, Md./Fallston) had two chances to tie the game late in the second half; however Mavericks keeper Craig Yanni would come up big, making saves for Medaille.

Medaille outshot Frostburg State 13-5 in the contest. Richardson was credited with eight saves, while Yanni made four for the Mavericks.

“Again, I was pleased with our work ethic and intensity on the field,” said head coach Keith Byrnes. “We had several guys step into new positions and I was extremely pleased with their performance. Of course we’re not happy with the loss, but we showed we can compete in the conference. Hopefully a 1-0 loss to the reigning league champions, can propel us to contend the rest of the season.”

Frostburg State hopes to rebound when they host Pitt-Greensburg, Wednesday, October 4 at 6:00 pm.
