WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Senior
Stefanie Ritz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) netted four goals to lead the Frostburg State women’s lacrosse team to a 10-8 victory over New England Wednesday evening.
The win snaps a four-game slide and the team finishes its spring break trip with a 2-4 overall record.
NEC scored the games first goal at 26:53, but FSU scored the next three to open a 3-1 lead. During the run, Ritz, junior Ashley Mattison (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and sophomore Lindsay Lamont (Sykesville, Md./Century) each found the net for the Bobcats.
Back-to-back goals by New England tied the game at 3-3 with 12:16 left in the opening half. The game remained tied until 1:44 when Ritz gave Frostburg State the lead with her second goal of the game. Less than a minute later, Ritz scored again to give FSU a 5-3 lead at the break.
In the second stanza, the Pilgrims narrowed the gap with a score at 26:40, but Ritz and junior Brittany Brumby (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) extended the Bobcat lead to 7-4 with 20:29 remaining.
After the teams exchanged two quick goals, NEC netted two-straight shots to cut the deficit to 8-7 with 3:39 showing on the clock. Senior Ann Long (New Market, Md./Linganore) gave the Bobcats some breathing room with a goal at 1:53 and Lamont added an insurance goal with 38 seconds left to make the score to 10-7.
New England scored with less then five seconds remaining to bring the game to a close.
Lamont had a solid effort for FSU with two goals and an assist while freshman keeper Erin Morrell (Easton, Md./Easton) stopped 13 shots.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday, March 29 when they travel to Shenandoah at 4:00 pm.
