FROSTBURG, Md. —With four players scoring in double figures, Frostburg State defeated Pitt-Greensburg 89-79 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener for both schools, Wednesday evening at Bobcat Arena.
With the win, FSU earned its first win of the season and is now 1-3 overall while Pitt-Greensburg falls to 0-5.
Junior Brian Green (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) led the way with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Junior Antione McCall (Essex, Md./Eastern Tech) had 16 scores, including 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to help FSU seal the win. Junior Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) scored 14 while freshman Ben Tubman (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) added 10.
Pitt-Greensburg was led by Rashad Davison with 23 points on 11-of-19 shooting. Ed Montgomery was second with 21 points and Matt Rowland was third on the team with 12.
FSU had its best shooting performance of the season, making 33-of-66 attempts while holding UPG to a 28-of-67 (41.8%) performance. Frostburg State also had its best effort from the free throw line, 73.9 percent, on 17-of-23 tries including 8-of-10 with less than two minutes remaining in the ballgame.
Frostburg State never trailed in the contest and opened a 10-point cushion, 17-7, just over six minutes into the game. Davison would cut the FSU lead to four, 23-19, with a three pointer at 8:48 but the hosts would score the next seven points to extend the lead to 11, 30-19 with 7:44 left in the half.
Pitt-Greensburg would make one final charge in the half when Montgomery hit two late three pointers to make the score 44-39 in favor of FSU at intermission.
The beginning of the second half proved to be in favor of UPG as it narrowed the deficit to 48-47 at 16:06, the closest the score had been since Frostburg State led by one at 18:16 in the first.
Both squads battled back and forth over the next six minutes until FSU used a 11-3 run to spread a four-point lead into a 15 point edge with 4:49 left in the game.
Pitt-Greensburg made one last charge, narrowing the score to 84-77 with under a minute to go, but Frostburg State made five free throws down the stretch to earn the 89-79 win.
FSU returns to the court on Saturday when it hosts rival Penn State Behrend at 4:00 pm at Bobcat Arena.
