FROSTBURG, Md. - Freshman Jeremy Robinson scored two rushing touchdowns to lead No. 6 ranked Wesley to a 32-7 victory over Frostburg State in Atlantic Central Football Conference action Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
FSU falls to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference while WC remains undefeated at 5-0 and opens league play 1-0.
The Wolverines got on the board first when Christian Cattanea booted a 22-yard field goal to give the visitors a 3-0 lead with 1:55 showing in the first quarter. The scoring chance was setup when sophomore Brandon Huntbach intercepted a FSU quarterback Josh Hager (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) pass at the Bobcat six.
Wesley would add to its lead late in the second period when Robinson capped a five play 66-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown. Freshman Aaron Jackson highlighted the drive bursting through the middle for 50-yards on the first play.
Robinson scored his second touchdown of the afternoon just 3:22 into the second half. Robinson took the senior quarterback Chris Warrick handoff and dove over the left side of the line and into the endzone to give Wesley a 16-0 advantage. Cattanea converted the extra point and WC appeared to be pulling away with a 17-0 lead.
FSU answered with 11:00 left in the fourth quarter when junior tailback Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic) scored from two yards out to cut the Wolverine deficit to 17-7. FSU started the drive on its own 36-yard line.
Hager completed four passes on the drive for 52 yards. On third and three, he connected with junior wideout Damian Shorter (Waldorf, Md./Lackey) for 25 yards to the Wesley 14.
On the ensuring kickoff, junior Eric Lowry returned the ball 89 yards for a Wesley touchdown, extending the lead to 23-7. On the extra point attempt, senior nose guard Justin Bressler (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) pushed his way through the line and blocked the kick to keep the score at 23-7.
The Wolverine defense came up big on the ensuing FSU drive, when senior Mario Harris and junior Jon Drummonds forced Bobcat punter Nicholas Payne (Frostburg, Md./Nothern Garrett) out of the back of the endzone for a safety.
The FSU possession started on its 15 but on the second play, freshman Rashad Mateen tackled Young for a 10-yard loss down to the five.
WC added to its lead with 6:50 left in the contest. Junior Jamal Williams stripped the ball from Hager in the endzone and classmate Bryan Robinson recovered it for a 32-7 lead.
Despite the loss, FSU outgained Wesley in first downs (14-12), passing yards (121-90) and time of possession (31:57-28:03). Frostburg State’s defense was impressive as well, holding Warrick to just 90 yards passing on 9-of-20 attempts with one interception. Warrick entered the game averaging 255.8 yards and three touchdowns per contest.
Defensively, Frostburg State was led by senior defensive back Vincent Thomas (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) with eight tackles including 0.5 tackles for loss. Junior linebacker Josh Keeney (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and sophomore linebacker Kevin Glascock (Welcome, Md./Lackey) led the team with 1.5 sacks.
Hager led the Bobcat offense, completing 10-of-30 passes for 120 yards and one interception.
Frostburg State returns to action next Saturday, when it hosts Thomas More at 1:00 pm.
