Erickson Nets Game Winner as Field Hockey Beats Villa Julie 3-2 In Overtime

FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomore Aly Erickson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) scored the game-winning goal for FSU with just 45 seconds left in overtime to beat Villa Julie 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

FSU improves to 4-8, while Villa Julie falls to 3-8.

Villa Julie got their first goal of the game from freshman Rachel Manly just 11:17 into the contest. Manley’s goal was unassisted and came off a penalty corner.

FSU tied the match one minute later when junior Brittany Blystone (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scored an unassisted goal for her first of the season.

The two teams would go into halftime with the game all tied at one.

The Bobcats scored their second goal in the 63rd minute when Erickson attacked the left side of the field, beat a defender and the goalie, for her first goal of the afternoon.

Erickson's goal looked to be the game winner but with just under one mintute left to play in regulation, the Mustangs’ Michelle Muir netted the equalizer with just 59 seconds left. Muir’s goal tied the game at 2-2 and sent the game into overtime.

In overtime both teams battled with great intesity and play was going back and forth. Erickson entered the game with three minutes left in overtime, and scored her second goal of the match, which was the game winner with only :45 seconds left to lift Frostburg State to the 3-2 victory.

FSU keeper Amanda Runion (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) recorded six saves and improved to 4-6 on the season. Kaitlin Brzozowski was credited with fifteen saves in the losing effort.

FSU returns to the field on October 7 when they travel to Eastern Mennonite. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 pm.
