FROSTBURG, Md. - Sophomore
Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech) and freshmen
Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) combined for 31 kills while leading Frostburg State to a 3-0 win over Lake Erie, Saturday afternoon.
FSU won by the scores of 30-22, 30-28 and 30-27 and snapped LEC’s four-game winning streak.
Frostburg State is now 11-17 overall and 6-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference while Lake Erie falls to 10-19 and 5-3 in the AMCC.
The teams battled to a 14-14 tie in game one, as neither squad was able to take more than a two-point advantage through the middle part of the contest.
FSU would finally pull away, scoring 10 out of the next 12 points for a 24-16 lead. The Bobcats took their largest lead of the game at 28-19 before going on for the win.
In game two, FSU opened an early 4-0 lead and eventually built it 12-7. The Storm would fight back to even the count at 18, but Frostburg State surged out to a 22-18 edge.
The visitor’s again battled back to tie the game at 25 before moving to a 28-26 lead. Frostburg State scored the final four point,s including three kills from Winterling, to earn the victory.
Lake Erie opened an 8-4 lead in the third game before FSU fought back to tie the game at 10. The game was later tied at 19 before the Storm scored five out of the next six points for a 24-20 lead.
Frostburg State scored the next four points to tie the game and later closed out the match scoring the final five to earn the win.
Winterling had a team-high 19 kills and nine digs while Wright added 12 kills. Freshman Samantha Quirin (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) led the team with 13 digs followed by sophomore Jennifer Wheaton (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) with 12 and freshman Chelsea Wassell (Westernport, Md./Southern Garrett) with five.
Senior setter Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md.Arundel) led the team with 33 assists.
Frostburg State returns to action on Wednesday, October 25 when it travels to Penn State Altoona at 7:00 pm.
