Virginia Wesleyan Downs Field Hockey

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Marlins scored three first half goals on their way to defeating Frostburg State 5-1, Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats fall to 3-8 overall, while Virginia Wesleyan improves to 6-4.

The Marlins received outstanding play from senior Chrissy Clancy and sophomore Nicole Duncan. Clancy tallied two goals, while Duncan posted a goal and an assist.

Virginia Wesleyan opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when Clancy received the ball from freshman Kim Tomlin and took a hard shot that found the net. The Marlins would then score a goal in the 33rd minute, when senior Laura Weidema assited Duncan on a shot from the left side of the field. VWC then would then tally another goal, just one minute before intermission, when senior Megan May would assit sophomore Liz Blount.

Virginia Wesleyan netted another goal, just 25 seconds into the second half, when Clancy recorded her second goal on an assist from Duncan.

Frostburg State Michelle Frost (Jessup, Md./Hammond) received the ball from junior Brittany Russell (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) and took a shot that found the back of the goal.

Virginia Wesleyan scored their fifth goal of the match at the 60:31 minute mark, when freshman Brianne McDonough assisted teammate Kasey Marchwicki.

The Marlins outshot the Bobcats 22-8. FSU keeper Amanda Runion (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) made 10 saves, while VWC goalkeeper Megan Koster recorded two.

Frostburg State looks to rebound as it hosts Villa Julie October 4, at 4:30 pm.
