Men's Basketball Falls to Pitt-Greensburg in AMCC Showdown, 78-77

GREENSBURG, Pa. — Despite having six players in double figures, the Frostburg State men’s basketball team lost to Pitt-Greensburg, 78-77, Saturday afternoon in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action.

Frostburg State (6-8, 3-4 AMCC), who led most of the game, shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) while Pitt-Greensburg shot 44.3 percent (31-of-70). The contest was close throughout, featuring 14 lead changes and 12 ties.

FSU held its largest lead of the half, 25-19, at the 8:56 mark after a sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) three pointer. Pitt-Greensburg answered by taking a one-point lead, 26-25, at 7:29 on a Bill Scavincky jumper.

With 2:17 remaining until halftime, sophomore Dale DeBerry (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) made a jumper that gave Frostburg State a four-point lead, 38-34.

Pitt-Greensburg would again take a one-point lead, 39-38, on back-to-back free throws from Scavincky with just 1:32 left. FSU would later regain the lead and enter halftime with a 42-41 advantage.

In the second, Frostburg State extended its lead to a game-high seven points, 58-51, when DeBerry made a jumper at 12:36. UPG would again answer by tying the ballgame at 59, with 10:06 left in regulation.

Neither team could take more than a two-point lead until the 3:19 mark when FSU senior Brandon Howell (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) gave the visitors a three-point cushion, 71-68, on back-to-back free throws.

Pitt-Greensburg answered by taking a 76-73 lead with less than 40 seconds to play after making back-to-back three pointers. Freshman Devin Jones (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) would tie the game for FSU with less than 10 seconds to play but Pitt-Greensburg made a late free throw to capture the win.

FSU was led by DeBerry with 14 points followed by McIntyre with 13. Owen, Jones and senior Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) each scored 11 points and sophomore Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) netted 10.

Pitt-Greensburg was powered by Scavincky with 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Frostburg State returns to action Tuesday, January 24 when its hosts Mt. Aloysius at 8:00 pm.
