GREENSBURG, Pa. — Tiffany Menhorn scored 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting to lead Pitt-Greensburg to a 71-69 victory over the Frostburg State women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon at Chambers Hall Gym.
FSU fell to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference while UPG improved to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in league action.
Both teams came out on fire as Pitt-Greensburg shot a blistering 65.6 percent (21-of-32) in the first half, while Frostburg State shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29).
The game was tied at 17, when FSU went on a 10-2 run, highlighted by five points from junior Krystin Hargrove (Silve Spring, Md./Springbrook), to open a 27-19 lead with 10:29 to play in the opening half.
However, UPG would rebound with an 18-2 run to take its on eight-point lead, 37-29, with 4:26 left. FSU would get within 41-37, but Pitt-Greensburg extended the lead to seven, 48-41, as the teams headed into the lockerroom.
Tish Hines gave UPG its largest lead of the game, 61-46, with a jumper at 15:37 in the second stanza. Pitt-Greensburg’s lead was 12, 69-57, with 7:42 to play after a Menhorn jumper. FSU would make a late charge while holding UPG to just one basket the rest of the game.
Freshman Caryn Wright (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) made a jumper at 4:24 that cut the Frostburg State deficit to 71-63. Less than a minute later, she made two free throws and senior Kenya Broadnax (Jessup, Md./Howard) made a layup cutting the UPG lead to just four, 71-67.
After three missed shots by Pitt-Greensburg, Hargrove made two free throws with 41 seconds remaining in the game to trail by two points. However, FSU was unable to take another shot as the game ended 71-69.
For the game, Frostburg State was 27-of-62 (43.5 percent) while Pitt-Greensburg was 32-of-50 (53.3 percent).
For the fourth-straight game, Wright led Frostburg State in scoring with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She also added nine rebounds. Junior Tracie George (Windber, Pa./Windber) scored 13 points while Hargrove added 10.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, January 24 when they host Mt. Aloysius at 6:00 pm.
