FROSTBURG, Md. — Frostburg State picked up a 3-1 win over Marymount in a non-conference match Thursday night at Bobcat Arena. Game scores were 30-25, 26-30, 30-27 and 30-21.
Frostburg State (7-14) began the evening with the 30-25 win in game one. The Bobcats took an early 8-5 lead and later held a 16-10 cushion before Marymount went on an 12-6 run to pull to even at 22. The match was tied three more times, the last at 25-25, before FSU notched the final five points to close out the victory.
Marymount (6-4) evened the match with a 30-26 victory in a back-and-forth second game. The Saints jumped out to a 9-4 lead before the Bobcats stormed back to take a 16-12 advantage. Marymount countered with a 10-3 spurt to open a 22-19 edge, but FSU regrouped and surged in front 24-23. The Saints then snapped a 26-26 deadlock with the last four winners.
Game three was another close contest that featured six ties, including the last at 19-19. FSU built a 26-22 advantage and watched as Marymount scored three straight to close to within a point. The Bobcats then closed the game out with four of the final five points for the 30-27 victory.
The Bobcats finished off the match with a 30-21 win in game four. FSU pulled away from a 9-9 tie behind an 8-3 run and later used a 6-1 spurt to stretch its advantage to 27-18. Senior Carly McDonald (Owings, Md./Northern) recorded a pair of kills to end the evening.
McDonald led the way with 18 kills followed by junior Amanda Frantz (Friendsville, Md./Northern Garrett (Garrett College)) with 14 and freshman Caryn Wright (Pikesville, Md./Western Tech) with 10. Junior Amanda Hernandez (Crofton, Md./Arundel) had 47 assists while McDonald had 14 digs.
Frostburg State returns to action Saturday when it visits Pitt-Bradford in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match starting at 1:00 pm.
