Field Hockey Defeats Virginia Wesleyan

FROSTBURG, MD — Senior Tawni Buck (Perryville, Md./Perryville) notched two goals, including the game-winner, in Frostburg State’s 3-1 victory over visiting Virginia Wesleyan in field hockey action Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Marlins fall to 6-2.

The mood for the game was set in the 10th minute when a foul was called on a VWC player and Buck had to face-off with sophomore goalie Megan Koster. She knocked the ball into the right side of the net for her first goal of the day. This gave FSU a 1-0 advantage at the break.

In the second half, senior Heidi Zook (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) fed the ball to Buck in the 45th minute to give Frostburg State a 2-0 lead.

In the 61st minute, Virginia Wesleyan senior Cara Byrd fed the ball to junior Holley Marchwicki to come within 2-1.

Five minutes later, sophomore Brittany Russell (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) hit the ball toward the VWC goal and it flew in the air. Freshman Sarah Rutland (North Potomac, Md./Holy Cross) got a piece of it and tapped in for an insurance goal.

Senior goalie Kristin Cousin (Edgewater, Md./South River) made four saves and picked up her fourth win of the season.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday, October 1 as they travel to Christopher Newport at 10:00 am.
