ROANOKE, VA — The Frostburg State field hockey team defeated Roanoke 4-1 Saturday afternoon to open the season 3-0 for the first time since 1987. Senior
Tawni Buck (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) led the charge by scoring one goal and adding two assists.
Leeanne Quark scored to give Roanoke a 1-0 lead with just 1:20 left in the first half.
In the second stanza, freshman Aly Erickson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) tied the game off a feed from sophomore Brittney Blystone (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) with 33:42 remaining.
FSU then took the lead at the 21:04 mark when Buck scored her first goal of the season from an assist by senior Heidi Zook (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley).
The Bobcats added insurance goals by junior Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder), at 8:23, and freshman Sarah Rutland (North Potomac, Md./Holy Cross), at 7:02, to seal the victory. Buck was credited with the assist on both goals.
Senior goalkeeper Kristin Cousin (Edgewater, Md./South River) made eight saves to earn the win, while sophomore backup Amanda Runion (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) made one save in the final 5:51.
Frostburg State returns to action Saturday, September 17 when it travels to Transylvania at 1:00 pm.
