Softball Opens AMCC Play with Sweep of Pitt-Greensburg

GREENSBURG, Pa. — Frostburg State opened its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule in style, sweeping host Pitt-Greensburg 11-3 and 15-2 Tuesday afternoon at Mutual Field.

The Bobcats pounded out 11 hits in the opener and followed with a season-high 17 hits in the nightcap to give interim head coach Wes Landrum two victories in his debut.

In the opener, FSU (7-8, 2-0 AMCC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first.

With two outs, sophomore Lori Potts (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) reached on an infield error and then scored on a double by junior Trish Brown (Manchester, Md./North Carroll). Brown advanced to third on an error on the play and later came home on a wild pitch.

Potts and Brown then teamed for another run in the third, hitting back-to-back doubles with two outs to give FSU a 3-0 lead.

Pitt-Greensburg (3-15, 0-2) pulled even in the fourth on a two-run single by Katie Bondarenka and an error, but FSU regained the lead for good in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior Bethany Seyler (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) before blowing things open with six runs in the sixth.

Junior Sarah Savoye (Davidsonville, Md./South River) started the outburst with a two-run triple and then scored on a single by junior Jessica Smith (La Vale, Md./Allegany). Senior Amanda Boswell (Marbury, Md./Lackey) later singled to drive in Smith and Potts added a two-run double to complete the inning.

Savoye doubled and scored on a groundout by sophomore Amanda Griswold (Rockville, Md./Magruder) in the seventh to finish the scoring.

Savoye went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored and was a home run shy of the cycle, while Brown was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored as well.

Potts (2-1) went the distance for the Bobcats, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out four in her second complete-game win of the year.

In the nightcap, Boswell, Brown and Savoye combined to go 9-for-14 with eight runs scored and seven RBIs to pace the blowout.

Boswell began the game with a single, then stole second and later scored to give the Bobcats the early 1-0 lead, but Pitt-Greensburg rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning to move in front.

FSU went ahead for good with a five-run third. Potts and Brown laced back-to-back RBI-singles to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead before Savoye drilled a two-run double. Junior Jen Cook (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) added a single that scored Savoye to make it a 6-2 contest.

Brown hit a solo homer to start the fifth, and Griswold and Boswell hit RBI-singles later in the inning to give FSU a 9-2 cushion. The Bobcats sealed the win with six more runs in the seventh.

Junior Shannon Sturtz (Middletown, Md./Middletown) allowed six hits and two runs over five innings to improve to 2-3 on the year. Cook then struck out all six batters she faced over the final two innings.

Boswell went a career-high 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Brown went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored and Savoye went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
