ERIE, Pa. - The Frostburg State men’s tennis team dropped matches to Alfred and Penn State Behrend Saturday at the Westwood Racquet Club.
The Bobcats fell to Alfred 6-1 in the morning before being edged by Penn State Behrend 5-4 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest later that evening.
In the first match of the day, FSU senior Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) and freshman Matt Chisholm (La Plata, Md./La Plata) posted an 8-6 win over Randy Vecchione and Kevin Dillon at No. 1 doubles, but Alfred claimed 9-7 and 8-2 victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 flights, respectively, to earn the team point.
Senior Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) earned FSU’s lone point with a 6-0, 6-2 sweep of Tim Inthirakoth at No. 2 singles.
Vecchione bested Lyst in a hard-fought 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 match at the top singles spot, and Alfred captured the Nos. 3-6 singles flights in straight sets.
In the evening, the Bobcats and Penn State Behrend battled through a tight match that featured a tiebreaker in doubles and four three-set singles matches.
Lyst and Chisholm outlasted Miles Boyea and Todd Guarnieri, 9-8, at the top doubles spot. The FSU duo clinched the win with a thrilling 14-12 victory in the tiebreaker.
The Lions then took the remaining two doubles flights and split the six singles matches to earn the narrow victory.
Lyst was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Boyea at No. 1 singles, and Spangenberg followed with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 defeat of Brian Espin at the No. 2 flight.
Chisholm then downed Guarnieri at No. 3, but Penn State Behrend won the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 flights in three sets.
Frostburg State, which is now 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the AMCC, returns to action Tuesday when it visits Juniata at 3:00 pm.
