Baseball Winning Streak Ends at 11 with Loss to W & J

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Frostburg State baseball team lost to Washington & Jefferson 16-8 Thursday afternoon at Bobcat Field ending its winning streak at 11 games.

The Bobcats fall to 17-9 overall while the Presidents improve to 12-7.

In the first inning, W&J took the early lead on a Chris Varacallo double that scored Greg Barton. After two scoreless innings for FSU, the Presidents scored five runs in the third to increase their lead to 6-0. Barton started the scoring with an RBI double and Shaun Pfeil and Ron Mitko hit back-to-back RBI triples to open the gap. Sam Mann capped the inning with an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Presidents added four more runs in fourth and two in the fifth to increase their advantage to 12-0. Mann led the charge in the fourth with an RBI double and a run scored while Mitko paced the fifth with an two-out RBI single that scored Pfeil.

The Bobcats cut into the President lead in bottom of the fifth when freshman Andrew Speights (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) crushed a two-out grand slam to right center that narrowed the deficit to 12-4.

In the seventh, W&J padded its lead with three two-out bases-loaded walks to bring the score to 15-4.

In the bottom of the frame, Bobcat freshman Allen Peake (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) scored on a wild pitch and junior Ryan Stevens (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) scored on a Speights ground out to close the gap to 15-6. Senior Justin Wilt (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick) added an RBI single in the eighth to make the score 15-7.

Both squads traded a run in the ninth to bring the scoring to a close.

Senior starter Brad Cannon (Federalsburg, Md./Colonel Richardson) lasted just 2 1/3 innings giving up five runs on seven hits to suffer his second loss on the year. W&J freshman Ryan Jaczesko pitched six innings allowing four runs on eight hits to earn the win.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday when they travel to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Lake Erie for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
