Lacrosse Loses to Catholic

WASHINGTON, DC — Sophomore Jaclyn Seward scored six goals and added one assist to lead Catholic to a 16-9 win over Frostburg State Tuesday afternoon at DuFour Field.

Frostburg State (4-4) opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the game when freshman Maria Schrum (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) found the net off a feed from freshman Lindsay Lamont (Sykesville, Md./Century).

However, the Cardinals (5-3) scored two minutes later to even the score at one.

At 26:29, Schrum scored her second goal of the game giving the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage. The Cardinals tied the game with a goal by Marisa Schaffer at 24:42.

Three minutes later, Bobcat senior Page Macey (Linthicum, Md./North County) scored on an assist from junior Kelley Duncan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) to give FSU a 3-2 lead.

FSU’s lead wouldn’t last long as Catholic netted back-to-back goals, the latter coming at 12:27, to take a 4-3 lead. The Bobcats then answered with goals by Duncan and sophomore Tina Trent (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) to retake the lead 5-4 with 9:54 remaining until halftime.

Catholic would take the lead for good however, scoring three goals to close out the half with a 7-5 lead.

The Cardinals added to their lead at the beginning of the second half on a goal by Seward. FSU battled back, getting two straight goals from Duncan and junior Stefanie Ritz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) to cut the Cardinal lead to 8-7 with 28:03 left.

Catholic would extend its lead to 9-7 at 24:11 on a goal by Kerin Sweeney. Frostburg State would again pull to within one (9-8) when Ritz scored on a pass from freshman Carly Rihard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll).

The Cardinals ended any Bobcat threat, scoring seven straight goals to take a commanding 16-8 lead.

With just 3:31 to play in the game, Trent brought the scoring to a close with her second goal on the afternoon. Bobcat freshman Rachael Lewis (Laurel, Md./Wilde Lake) recorded 15 saves while falling to 4-4 on the season.

FSU returns to action on April 2, 2005 when it hosts Salisbury at noon.
