NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Jeremy Romeo scored a game-high 20 points to lead Christopher Newport to a 71-60 victory over the Frostburg State men’s basketball team in non-conference action Saturday night.
Senior Marcus McIntyre (Washington, D.C./Wilson) opened a 5-0 lead for the Bobcats with a layup at the 18:18 mark, but the Captains scored nine-straight points to take the lead with 16:24 remaining.
Senior Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) and junior William Gross (Baltimore, Md/Owings Mills (Catonsville CC)) each made a pair of free throws to tie the game at nine with 15:24 left.
CNU would later take a five-point lead, 21-16, on a Romeo three pointer at 6:45. However, sophomore Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) made back-to-back jumpers to cut the deficit to 21-20 with 4:44 left in the half.
Christopher Newport then used a 12-2 run to close out the half taking a 33-22 lead into the break.
Donta Seldon made a free throw at 16:55 in the second half to give CNU its largest lead of the game, 41-27. Backed by six points from both Hazel and redshirt-sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville), FSU went on a 13-2 run to cut the Captain lead to 43-40 at 13:14.
CNU then opened a nine-point lead with 10:16 left in the contest. The Bobcats made one final charge cutting to within five, 56-51, on a sophomore Brian Green (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) layup with 5:04 to play. The Captains would prove to be to much, however, taking a 10-point lead with just 2:10 to play before going on to win by 11.
Hazel led FSU with 16 points followed by Ryley with 12 points and 14 rebounds, marking his fourth double-double of the season.
Frostburg State returns to action January 6 when it travels to Lake Erie at 7:00 pm.
