Track … An All-American five times: three times in the 400-meter hurdles, and once each in the 4x400 relay and the 400-meter relay. In 1982, she was a national champion in the 4x400, and placed 3rd in the national meet in the 400m. hurdles and 3rd in the 400 relay, thus earning All-American awards three times that year. Won the same honor in hurdles in 1981, and again in 1983, with 6th place and 4th place finishes respectively. A member of the ’82 team that placed 2nd in the country in Division III.
In 1981 she was EAIAW Division III All-East in the indoor 55m. hurdles (4th), and the outdoor 100m. hurdles (3rd), and 400 hurdles (4th). She was a member of the Eastern champion 4x400 relay team and of the F.S.U. team which placed 3rd in the Eastern Championships. Val was the 1981 Mason-Dixon champion in the 400m. hurdles and 4x400 relay, and in ’82 repeated that feat in the 4x400 relay, both indoors and outdoors.
As a freshman, Val set F.S.U. records in the 50- and 60-yd. hurdles and the 1600m. relay. She later reset the 60 hurdles record (8.55) and established F.S.U. marks in the 400m. hurdles (63.63), the 400 relay (48.7) and 4x400m. relay (3:50.53). Her records held for several years. The 1983 team captain – the ECAC Scholar-Athlete Award winner in 1983 – an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship winner. Four letters in four years.
