Baseball … A left-handed power hitting third baseman who held many F.S.C. batting records at the time of his induction. Bypassed his senior year to sign a professional contract with the N.Y. Mets in 1979.
Seasonal Records: most home runs – 9, most extra base hits – 23, most total bases – 91, slugging average - .758, and tied for most sacrifice flies – 4, all in 1978.
Holds the Frostburg record for the highest career batting average for a 3-year player - .377. Led the team in many categories: with a batting average of .442 in 1976 and.383 in 1978; in RBI’s with 41 in 1978; and in homeruns with 5 in 1977 and 9 in 1978. Others include 30 games played in 1977, 46 hits, 10 doubles and a .758 slugging average in 1978; 3 triples in 1976; and 44 and 91 total bases in 1977 and 1978 respectively.
In 1978 John was named the first-team third baseman to the All-Maryland, All-NAIA District, and All-NAIA area teams. Hit a grand slam home run in his first collegiate at-bat vs. Virginia State. Played in the prestigious Cape Cod Collegiate Summer League in 1978. In his first year of pro ball he missed by a few at-bats winning the N.Y.-Penn. League batting title, hitting .368. Three letters in three seasons.
