Herford Invited to Harrisburg City Islanders Preseason Training

Senior Jay Herford
FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State senior goalkeeper Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River) has been invited to the Harrisburg City Islanders preseason camp that begins in March and was also asked to particpate in their evening training sessions in January, announced late in December.

The Islanders and Vancouver Whitecaps, both of the United Soccer League, held a player combine for over 90 participants on December 17th in order to evaluate potential players for the upcoming 2009 USL season.

Herford, a two-year starter in net for the Bobcats, helped FSU to a 26-14-2 overall record and a 12-4-1 AMCC mark in the last two years. In 2007, FSU advanced to the ECAC South Region Tournament Championship while in 2008, the Bobcats advanced to the ECAC Tournament Semifinals.

Herford, a two-time All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Goalkeeper, finished his senior season ranked second in the league in goals against average (0.77), third in goals allowed (15) and save percentage (0.797) and ninth in saves (59).

Harrisburg City, which identified 10 field players and two keepers during the combine, finished fifth in the USL Division two standings with a 7-3-10 overall record in 2008. The Whitecaps posted a 15-7-8 record and a second-place finish as a member of the USL Division one league.

The players were evaluated by Harrisburg coaches Bill Becher and Steve Widdowson along with Whitecaps coaches Teitur Thordarson and Todd Wawrousek.
